Abstract: The Rainbow vent field is vigorous ultramafic rock hosted seafloor hydrothermal system located in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). This system is quite remarkable due to its record high temperature for MAR fluids, low pH and metal-rich nature (e.g., Fe-Cu-Au-Co) within a non-transform discontinuity. I will revisit the geology and geochemistry of the system and integrate that knowledge with more recent published data (numerical simulations, Zn-Cu-Fe isotope systematics, high resolution magnetics and seismic refraction). The purpose being, obtain a more complete picture of the seafloor and sub-seafloor processes that make the Rainbow such a unique system.
Short bio: A. Filipa A. Marques has graduated in Geology at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, and obtained her PhD at the same institution. Filipa has focused her research on seafloor hydrothermal systems and their metallogenesis. Specifically, the Rainbow Vent Field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, triggering its classification as a prototypical modern analogue of mafic-ultramafic seafloor massive sulfide. Filipa Marques was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Toronto, a researcher and Invited Professor at the University of Lisbon and an Associate Professor at the University of Bergen. Filipa is a volunteer fellow at the CSIRO’s Australian Resources Research Centre, and a fellow at the Geological Society of London.
