Abstract: How we detect and process sound is a fundamental question in auditory research. Quantification of hearing abilities is the technical basis for answering this question. In this talk, I will first present the anatomy of the mammalian ear, followed by the optical measurement of the mechanical vibration on the middle and inner ear, and common methods such as Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) used to quantify auditory sensitivity in humans and lab animals. I will present ABR results on disease models (exposed to noise, drug and gene modifications). For other research organisms such as the small larval zebrafish and drosophila, alternative psychoacoustic approaches such as the pre-pulse inhibition will be presented and discussed.
Short bio: Fangyi CHEN obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in the field of Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University (Beijing, China). He received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The University of Boston (2005). He worked as a Research Associate and Research Engineer in the Oregon Hearing Research Centre from 2005 to 2012. In 2012, Dr. CHEN joined Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech, Shenzhen, China) as an Associate Professor and became the vice president of the Zhiren College and the Executive Dean of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on the development of the instruments in otolaryngology, in vivo study of the cochlear mechanics, and functional assessment of the hearing and vestibular systems in animal models.
