This project focuses on using mangroves as a nature-based solution to address
environmental challenges in Macao.

Like many coastal cities worldwide, Macao is facing significant environmental issues, including air and water pollution, the urban heat island effect, increased flood risks,
and the rising frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as super typhoons.

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) offer an innovative approach by harnessing natural processes and ecosystem services to effectively tackle these pressing societal and environmental challenges.

This project aims to fill key knowledge gaps related to mangrove ecosystem services, flood protection, microbial processes, and community awareness.

These efforts are expected to provide valuable insights that will help policy and guide coastal management and strengthen Macao’s urban resilience in the face of environmental challenges.

The project includes the following tasks:

TASK 1
To investigate how mangrove ecosystems in Macao contribute to urban
microclimate regulation.

TASK 2
To gather additional data on the efficiency of the local mangroves for coastal flood
attenuation and associated hazards through in-situ measurements.

TASK 3
To explore microbial biomineral production and coastal erosion in mangroves

TASK 4
To promote the importance of mangroves through community engagement
activities
